How about an engagement portrait shoot with a theme? An engagement shoot is a “couple portrait shoot”, which usually takes place in the run up before a planned wedding – or to celebrate a recent engagement – a shoot that captures the love between two people, how they look and feel at that point of time. These shoots have been commonly used to give couples nice photos for their invitations or wedding web site. But today, lets talk about how an engagement portrait shoot can be developed into something even a bit more of a “fun thing”.
I’m of course talking about the creation of a theme around your couple’s portrait session or engagement shoot. This really kicked off a few years back. One of my favourites spotted on Pinterest and enthusiastically blogged by different wedding bloggers, and of course copied worldwide by other couples – must have been the one, where the couple is having an idyllic picnic, only to be interrupted by a bloody zombie. And it all turns into a horror shoot. (Yes the Walking dead series had just premiered at the time)
Of course, a themed shoot doesn’t have to be quite as vivid as blood- stained zombies attacking 😉 . It can be something fun made out of a location, something that reflects your personalities and / or your style of wedding, a bit of styling that adds to the feel of the images and gives more ideas for shots.
I hope I can give some inspiration today, with these three different engagement shoots that I photographed, where the couples where inspired each by their own theme: 50’s vintage, English mystery movies, and English style village fetes theme.
A 1950s style picnic shoot! Mary and Davin where making plans for a cozy 1950s themed wedding, inviting their guests to stay with them at an old fashion barn for a pre- wedding day barbecue, followed by a vintage themed wedding the following day. So they decided to go for a 1950s themed engagement shoot, with the feel of a spontaneous picnic a la vintage style…
Here follows a London shoot inspired by old English mystery movies! One thing that these lovely two would keep smiling about, was how they both as teenagers – years before they knew of one and other – had been really obsessed with the Agatha Christie stories. In fact that was the topic that melted the ice on their first date. So when it came to planning their wedding, they decided that a bit of an Agatha Christie theme for their London City wedding would be perfect. So all those old Agatha Christie books got dug out from their book shelves, as the couple decided to “warm up” before their day with an “Agatha Christie inspired” engagement shoot that brought us through old alley ways until we reached the headquarters of Poirot…
